Family Planning
Our GPs and nurses are able to offer comprehensive Family Planning advice to our patients, whether you require something to prevent pregnancy:
- in the short term e.g. barrier contraception, pill, depo injection; or
- longer-term prevention which can be stopped at a later date (Long Acting Reversible Contraception LARC); or
- something more permanent (e.g. vasectomy or sterilisation).
LARC Clinic
Our LARC clinic is currently held on alternate Wednesday mornings and is run by Dr Aderonmu, one of our GPs who specialises in Family Planning and, in particular, the administration of Intra-Uterine Devices (coils) and sub dermal implants.
Coil: The coil is inserted through the neck of the womb using a local anaesthetic and offers very good (over 99%) protection against unwanted pregnancy. This can be done at any time of your cycle but please be aware of the importance of not having unprotected intercourse between your period and having your coil fitted.
Implant: The implant is inserted under the skin of the upper arm, once again this is done using a local anaesthetic and offers over 99% protection against pregnancy for up to three years. This can be done at any time of your cycle but please be aware of the importance of not having unprotected intercourse between your period and having your implant inserted.
Both methods are reversible although it differs from person to person as to how soon full fertility returns after removal of the implant assuming there are no other factors affecting this.
If you would like to discuss one of these options, please contact your GP in the first instance. However, if you already have one of the above or have discussed your suitability for the procedure, then please speak to one of our senior receptionists, Dee or Julia, who will be happy to give you the next available appointment.
We are currently unable to offer appointments to patients from other GP Practices.
