Contraception
Our GPs and nurses are able to offer comprehensive Family Planning advice to our patients, whether you require something to prevent pregnancy:
- in the short term e.g. barrier contraception, pill, depo injection; or
- longer-term prevention which can be stopped at a later date (Long Acting Reversible Contraception LARC); or
- something more permanent (e.g. vasectomy or sterilisation).

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)
Long-acting reversible contraception is one of the most effective methods of preventing pregnancy. These methods do not require daily action and can provide protection for several years.
Contraceptive Implant
- A small flexible rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm.
- Provides highly effective contraception for up to three years.
- Can be removed at any time if you wish to become pregnant.
Coil (IUD/IUS)
- Inserted into the womb by a trained clinician.
- Depending on the type used, can provide contraception for several years.
- Some hormonal coils can help manage heavy, painful, or irregular periods and are commonly used in the treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding.
- Can offer both effective contraception and symptom relief for some patients.
Emergency Contraception
If you have had unprotected sex or your contraception has failed, emergency contraception may be available. Please contact the surgery as soon as possible, as some methods are most effective when provided promptly.
Contraception After Pregnancy
We can discuss contraception following childbirth, miscarriage, or abortion and help you choose a suitable method that fits your circumstances.
How to Book
If you would like to discuss contraception, arrange a review of your current method, or enquire about an implant or coil fitting, please contact the surgery or submit a request through our online consultation service. A clinician will help determine the most appropriate appointment for your needs.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Which contraception is most effective?
Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), such as implants and coils, are among the most effective forms of contraception. These methods work continuously and do not rely on remembering to take a tablet every day.
How do I know which contraceptive method is right for me?
The best method depends on your age, medical history, lifestyle, future pregnancy plans, and personal preferences. Our clinicians can discuss the available options and help you choose a method that suits your needs.
Can I change my contraception?
Yes. If your current contraception is not working well for you, or your circumstances have changed, we can discuss alternative options and help you switch safely.
Are contraceptive consultations confidential?
Yes. All consultations are confidential. This applies to adults and young people, provided the clinician is satisfied that they understand the advice and treatment being offered.
Can I have a coil fitted at Queensway Surgery?
Yes. We offer coil (IUD and IUS) fitting by appropriately trained clinicians. Coils can be used both for contraception and for managing certain gynaecological conditions, including heavy or abnormal bleeding.
Can I have an implant fitted at Queensway Surgery?
Yes. We provide contraceptive implant fitting and removal appointments. A clinician can discuss whether the implant is suitable for you.
What should I do if I miss a contraceptive pill?
The advice depends on the type of pill you take and how many pills have been missed. Please contact the surgery for advice or refer to the patient information leaflet supplied with your medication.
Can I get contraception after having a baby?
Yes. Many contraceptive methods can be started soon after giving birth. We can discuss the most suitable option for you at your postnatal check or another convenient appointment.
What if I need emergency contraception?
If you have had unprotected sex or think your contraception may have failed, please contact the surgery as soon as possible. Emergency contraception is most effective when provided quickly.
Do condoms protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?
Yes. Condoms are the only contraceptive method that help protect against both pregnancy and most sexually transmitted infections. Other forms of contraception do not protect against STIs.
Can contraception help with heavy or painful periods?
Yes. Some contraceptive methods, particularly hormonal coils and certain contraceptive pills, can help reduce heavy bleeding and improve period-related symptoms.
Where else can I get sexual health advice?
